The Tibetan Aid Project relies on the kind support of volunteers. Since its inception in 1969, Tibetan Aid Project has been a volunteer organization. Through this sustained volunteer effort Tibetan Aid Project has thrived, continuing to fulfill its robust mission for over five decades. We invite you to join us.
While Tibetan Aid Project has its roots in the Buddhist tradition, we welcome volunteers from all traditions and backgrounds.

Part-Time Volunteers
We offer flexible scheduling Monday through Saturday. Tibetan Aid Project’s offices are located at our sister organization, Nyingma Institute, in the Berkeley hills minutes from the UC Berkeley campus and accessible by BART, bus, and freeway with complimentary off-street parking. Delicious vegetarian lunch is provided for those who can join us for two hours or more. All volunteers contributing a minimum of 10 hours per month for three months are eligible for classes at a reduced fee at the Nyingma Institute.
Full-Time
Residential Work-Study Program
This program is designed for individuals who have an interest in Buddhist studies, meditation, and the application of Buddhist practice in one’s life and work. Within a supportive environment, individuals can learn how to develop and integrate mindfulness into everyday life. The program is based on the practice of “Skillful Means,” a book written by Tarthang Rinpoche focused on work being a path for personal insight, growth and transformation. A six-month commitment is required, including a one-month trial period.
The Work/Study Program includes:
Living and working in a Buddhist focused environment
Accommodations (single or double occupancy)
Meals
Buddhist classes and programs
Evening and weekend classes at the Nyingma Institute are a significant component of the program. Work/Study participants may choose from a variety of subjects including but not limited to:
Meditation
Kum Nye (traditional Tibetan relaxation and movement)
Buddhist philosophy and psychology
Skillful Means
Classical Tibetan language
