The residential work-study program offers accommodation, food, and Buddhist study classes for people interested in full-time volunteer work.
This program is designed for individuals who have an interest in Buddhist studies, meditation and the application of Buddhist practice in the work environment. All religious traditions are welcome, but a sincere interest in Buddhism is helpful. A six-month commitment is required, and there is a month-long trial period.
Volunteers live at the Nyingma Institute in Berkeley in shared rooms. Work takes place at a Nyingma residential center, about a 15 minutes walk from the Institute, where Tibetan Aid Project (TAP) has its office.
Evening classes at the Institute is a significant component of the program. Work-study participants generally take four classes a week, selecting from such subjects as meditation, Kum Nye (Tibetan relaxation techniques), Buddhist philosophy and psychology, Skillful Means, and classical Tibetan language study. Classes are chosen with the help of an advisor and participants can select two weekend workshops each quarter.
